## What is it?

Compressed archives over 1 GB anywhere in your home folder: .zip, .7z, .rar, .tar, .gz, .tgz, .bz2, .xz and .zst. Many are downloads already expanded next to them; others are backups or exported projects that may be your only copy.

## What happens if you delete it?

Not recreated. If the contents still exist elsewhere, the archive is redundant; if not, deleting it loses them.

## How to remove it properly

List the contents without expanding, with `unzip -l file.zip` or `tar -tf file.tar.gz` in Terminal, and check the files exist elsewhere. Move redundant archives to the Trash, and copy backup archives to an external drive before removing them.

## Before you delete it

Archives named like backups or exports are often the only copy of old projects or photo sets.
