## What is it?

VS Code keeps state for each folder or workspace you open in `~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/workspaceStorage`, in folders with hashed names: open editors, UI layout, data saved by extensions and AI chat history. Folders for projects you no longer open stay forever. Only those untouched for 90 days are considered here.

## What happens if you delete it?

No. If you reopen that project, VS Code starts it with a clean state: no restored tabs, and extension data and chat history for that workspace are gone. Your project files are not touched.

## How to remove it properly

Quit VS Code, then move old folders to the Trash in Finder (Go › Go to Folder… `~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/workspaceStorage`). Each folder’s `workspace.json` shows which project it belongs to.

## Before you delete it

Copilot and other AI chat sessions for a workspace are stored here; keep folders whose chat history you may want.
