AppCleaner is one of the simplest ways to uninstall a Mac app properly: you drop the app onto its window, it finds the related files, and you delete them with one button. It is free and does nothing else, and that focus is its strength. MoreRoom includes an uninstaller too, but it is one feature inside a storage manager. If uninstalling apps is all you need, AppCleaner is a good choice and you do not need MoreRoom.
What each app is
AppCleaner, by FreeMacSoft, describes itself as a small application that lets you thoroughly uninstall unwanted apps. Installing an app spreads small files across your system; AppCleaner finds them so you can remove them along with the app. As of October 2026, FreeMacSoft offers version 3.7 for macOS 15 and later, version 3.6.8 for macOS 10.14 to 15.6, and older builds for macOS 10.10 to 10.13. It is a free download, and the site has a donation link.
MoreRoom, by Yando Pte. Ltd., is a native macOS storage manager for macOS 15 Sequoia or later. It scans the whole disk and shows it as a treemap, rings or list; explains System Data; recognises 249 known space hogs with “Safe to remove” or “Review first” badges; and includes an app uninstaller that finds leftovers. Uninstalling apps, one at a time, is free.
Where AppCleaner is better
- Free, with nothing to upgrade. Every feature is available without paying.
- Simplicity. Drag an app onto the window, review, delete. There is almost nothing to learn.
- Older Macs. FreeMacSoft keeps versions available for macOS 10.10 through 15.6. MoreRoom needs macOS 15 Sequoia.
- Small and single-purpose. If you just want an uninstaller, a dedicated tool keeps things clear.
Where MoreRoom is better
- The uninstaller is part of a bigger picture. Apps are often not the main reason a disk is full. MoreRoom shows everything else too — System Data, developer caches, simulators, Docker, local AI models, iCloud downloads — and explains what each item is.
- Trash first, with Undo. Uninstalled apps and their leftovers go to the Trash first, and you can undo.
- Large app data explained. Beyond uninstalling, MoreRoom’s rules recognise big folders that apps and tools keep in known locations, labelled “Safe to remove” or “Review first”. You can browse these in the folder directory.
- Tools that have their own uninstall command. For things like old Homebrew downloads or Rust toolchains, MoreRoom uses the tool’s own command — for example
brew cleanup --prune=allorrustup toolchain uninstall— instead of deleting folders, and labels those steps as permanent. - Storage over time. Storage Weather (30-day history and forecast), optional low-space alerts and a desktop widget are free.
Another free option
Pearcleaner is a free, source-available uninstaller (Apache 2.0 with Commons Clause) that supports macOS 13 and later and adds features such as orphaned-file search, a Finder extension and a command line. As of October 2026, its developer lists the project as on hold, with development largely stopped since the end of 2025, so check its GitHub page before relying on it.
Which should you choose?
Choose AppCleaner if…
- you only want to uninstall apps cleanly;
- you want a free tool with no upgrade path;
- your Mac runs a macOS version older than 15.
Choose MoreRoom if…
- you want to find out what is filling your disk, not just remove apps;
- you want leftovers and other items explained with safety badges;
- you want the Trash and Undo as a safety net for everything you remove.
Uninstalling by hand
You can also remove an app manually: quit it, move it from /Applications to the Trash, then look for its folders in ~/Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Caches, ~/Library/Containers and ~/Library/Preferences. Apps that run in the background may also have placed a file in ~/Library/LaunchAgents or /Library/LaunchAgents; remove only the one that clearly belongs to the app you uninstalled, and leave anything you do not recognise. Some apps ship their own uninstaller, which is the best option when it exists, because it also knows about helpers and system extensions the app installed. Our guide How to uninstall Mac apps completely covers each location and what is safe to remove.

Frequently asked questions
Is AppCleaner free?
Yes. AppCleaner is a free download from FreeMacSoft's website, which also has a donation link.
Which version of AppCleaner should I download?
As of October 2026, FreeMacSoft lists AppCleaner 3.7 for macOS 15 and later, 3.6.8 for macOS 10.14 to 15.6, and older versions for earlier systems.
Does MoreRoom uninstall apps for free?
Yes. The free version uninstalls apps one at a time, with their leftovers, and moves them to the Trash with Undo.
Do I need an uninstaller at all?
Dragging an app to the Trash removes the app itself, which is usually most of its size. Settings, caches and support files in your Library folder stay behind; an uninstaller finds those for you. Our guide on uninstalling Mac apps completely shows where they live.
